Clean Air Day is the UK’s largest air pollution campaign and is celebrated annually on the third Thursday of June. Clean Air Day focuses on building awareness of the affects of air pollution and how we can work together to tackle air pollution.

Why is Clean Air Day important?

Participating in Clean Air Day means that you can contribute towards improving air quality and creating a healthier future. Air pollution is a global problem, posing a great risk to both humans and the environment. It is estimated that one-third of deaths worldwide are caused by air pollution. This is a prominent issue in cities and urban areas in developing countries, where people are exposed to higher levels of air pollution. As well as having an impact on human health, air pollution can result in climate change and global warming. With the UN stating that climate change could be irreversible by 2030, it is important that we take urgent action to reduce air pollution.

What can I do to get involved?

There are many changes you can make in order to reduce the impact of air pollution for our planet and help to protect the environment.

1. Reduce vehicle emissions

Choose to walk, bike, or use public transport where you can. If you do need to drive, consider the option of getting an electric vehicle. According to the EEA, emissions from electric cars are roughly 17-30% lower than the emissions from petrol and diesel cars. Electric vehicles also eliminate all toxic emissions, such as nitrogen oxide and carbon monoxide, which reduces air pollution considerably. Find out more about EV chargers here .

2. Switch to clean energy

Use energy-efficient appliances in your home and explore ways to reduce your energy consumption in your home. Consider installing solar panels on your home to reduce your carbon emissions and cut your electricity bills. 3. Compost organic waste

Approximately one-third of waste sent to landfill in the UK could be transformed into compost. Landfill sites emit harmful gases into the atmosphere as the waste decays, thus contributing to air pollution. Composting your organic waste reduces greenhouse gas emissions and helps to put nutrients back into the soil. You can then use this compost to grow your own food without creating any carbon emissions.

June 5th marks World Environment Day, which promotes environmental awareness and action. This year’s theme focuses on land restoration, drought resilience, sustainable agriculture and renewable energy use.

What is renewable energy?

Renewable energy is energy that comes from natural sources which are self-replenishing and will not run out. The main sources of renewable energy include solar power, hydro power and wind energy. Renewable energy sources are incredibly important in protecting the environment as they do not produce harmful carbon dioxide emissions which lead to climate change.

Why is renewable energy important?

The UK currently generates around 40% of its energy using renewable sources. The majority of the UK’s renewable energy comes from wind power (29.7%), biomass (5.2%) and solar power (4.5%). In 2008, the UK pledged to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 80% in order to reach net zero by 2050. Renewable energy sources like solar and wind power do not produce carbon emissions and therefore can help to tackle climate change.

What can I do to protect the environment?

There are lots of small things you can do to help protect our planet and contribute towards becoming net zero.

1. Reduce, reuse recycle

Follow the principles of reduce, reuse and recycle to minimise waste generation and reduce the need for new raw materials. Roughly 80% of household waste is recyclable, however only 45% of UK households waste is actually recycled. If all plastic were recycled, it could save between 30-150 million tonnes of CO2 each year.

2. Energy conservation

Conserve energy at home by turning off lights when not in use, opt for energy-saving appliances, and consider transitioning to renewable energy like solar power. Installing solar panels not only reduces your carbon emissions but they can also cut your electricity bills by 70%. You can find out more about solar panel installations here .

3. Minimise vehicle use

Choose to walk, bike, or use public transportation whenever possible to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from vehicles. One study found that replacing car journeys with public transport could reduce CO2 emissions by 42% if using the bus and 73% when traveling by train.

4. Water conservation

Save water by repairing leaks, using water-saving equipment, and minimising water waste in daily activities. Even just turning off the tap while brushing your teeth can save around 12 litres of water!

Solar & Storage Live is one of the UK's largest solar expos, held at The ExCel in London.

We attended this event on April 29th, and the following are our key takeaways.

What is Solar & Storage Live?

Since its 2012 launch in Birmingham, Solar & Storage Live UK has grown to be the biggest solar energy event in the UK. The two-day event showcases a huge range of solar and storage equipment manufacturers and includes demonstrations, installer training, networking opportunities and talks by guest speakers from within the solar industry.

Why we chose to attend the event

We visited Solar & Storage Live as part of our annual CPD commitments and also to learn more about some of the new products soon to be available, such as the long awaited GivEnergy three-phase version of their All In One battery storage system.

As the largest solar expo in the United Kingdom, it was an excellent opportunity for us to get a firsthand look at some of the latest technology, products and services that are driving the transition to more intelligent and environmentally-friendly energy solutions.

GivEnergy

As an approved GivEnergy installer, we took the chance to learn more about the new three phase All In One home battery storage system ahead of its UK launch. We also received an update on the progress being made regarding the linking of existing single phase All In Ones, which will better help to accommodate our customers growing storage requirements. We discovered some important details on the most recent firmware releases, which will enable integration with the Octop us Energy Intelligent flux smart tariff, enabling users to achieve even greater savings on their energy bills. We look forward to learning more during our annual training visit at GivEnergy HQ in June.

We also caught up with Mick Gaughan from Infinity Innovations, who were demonstrating the latest offering from Hanchu, namely the ESS 9.4kWh blade lithium battery. Hanchu ESS are an established manufacturer of battery storage and renewable technology systems. Their residential and commercial battery solutions have claimed a substantial market share and are distributed worldwide. The latest models includes a number of safety features such as a 95% depth of discharge (DOD), a 12-year manufacturer's warranty and all at a very competitive price point for the domestic market.

MCS is an internationally recognized certification scheme for renewable energy products and installers. Choosing an MCS certified installer for your solar panel installation offers many benefits, read on to find out more.

Quality Assurance and Standards

MCS is a mark of quality and having solar panels installed to your home of business is a great investment, however, finding the right installer is an important consideration that should not be overlooked. All MCS certified installers must complete rigorous training in installation, quality assurance and adherence to the latest industry standards. This means you can have complete peace of mind knowing that your installation will be carried out by a professional company who have the necessary knowledge and experience.

Government Grants and Incentives

• Build a good relationship. Consider first impressions, does the installer seem friendly and knowledgeable, are they listening to you and taking note of requirements?

• Find out what warranties and aftersales support they will provide. An MCS certified installer should be open and transparent about their terms and conditions and will be dedicated to customer support.

• Most installers will be happy for you to see previous work for yourself or can provide references from previous customers.

• Seek recommendations from friends and family who have had a solar PV installation. Would they be happy to recommend the installer that they used?

The UK Government announces 0% VAT on Battery Storage Systems...

The UK government has, from 1st February 2024 removed VAT on the installation of solar battery storage, where previously the VAT relief was only available for batteries installed at the same time as solar panels.

The updated policy not only covers new combined solar PV and battery storage systems, but now also includes the installation of a standalone battery and retrofitted batteries to an existing solar PV system.

Existing Solar PV Systems

The new rules for VAT on battery storage systems is particularly beneficial for owners of existing solar PV systems allowing the storage of excess solar generated energy to be used in the home or business at a later time. This enhances the efficiency of solar energy usage and plays a crucial role in the broader adoption of renewable energy sources.

Standalone Battery Storage Systems

If you are unable to have solar panels installed at your property you can still take advantage of the 0% VAT incentive on having a storage battery installed. Many electricity suppliers offer time-of-use electricity tariffs which enables time shifting, the ability to store your electricity at a discounted rate overnight, allowing it to be used at a later time when electricity prices are much higher.

Cutting Carbon Emissions

By making renewable technology accessible and affordable for more households the government is able to promote the use of sustainable energy. With the UK’s commitment to reach net zero by 2050 this move couldn’t have come at a better time.

How Long Will the VAT Incentive Last?
